There are some things in life that, when you discover them you can only ask “where has this been all my life?!” My most recent lip balm discovery is one of those things. After Hurricane Irma ravaged the Virgin Islands on September 5, 2017, we, like the vast majority of those in the Virgin Islands, were left without power or running water for days on end. That is not to mention facing a scarcity of food and cash, and long lines for just about everything we need to live on a daily basis. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a complaint – especially considering that many people lost much more to the storm, including their homes, cars, and in a few cases loved ones. After a few days we were able to evacuate to Puerto Rico, and then to the continental United States. Evacuating for a few days turned out to be a great decision as we were able to be of greater assistance to others affected by Hurricane Irma when we were off-island than we were prior to evacuating St. Thomas.
While in Puerto Rico we ran into a colleague from the Virgin Islands who recommended that we go to Ben & Jerry’s for breakfast because they have great pancakes. Wait! What? Ben & Jerry’s for what?!?! In all of my years living in Canada, the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands I had never heard of Ben & Jerry’s selling breakfast or food of any sort, let alone warm, delicious buttery, syrup-laden pancakes. Two days later I set out to do my own taste-test and see whether these pancakes live up to the hype. My little exploratory mission took a slight detour as I was immediately distracted by something even better on the menu: Belgian waffles. After asking whether they had maple syrup because sorry, but corn syrup and fillers can ruin even the most delicious waffle, I placed my order and waited. My order arrived, with nothing less than organic maple syrup. Turns out Ben & Jerry’s makes an incredibly delicious Belgian waffle that is cooked to perfection. As if the discovery of Ben & Jerry’s breakfast wasn’t enough, I made another discovery while waiting for my order.
Ben & Jerry’s makes all-natural lip balm with completely clean ingredients, and equally exciting is that their lip balms have the same scents as their classic ice cream flavours! It should be no surprise – even though I was surprised – that the ingredients used to formulate these lip balms are of the same high-quality as what we have come to expect from their ice cream (and now their breakfast food too). The ingredients of Ben & Jerry’s lip balms are:
- Organic Palm Oil
- Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Organic Hemp Seed Oil
- Organic Jojoba Oil
- Shea Butter
- Vitamin E
- Rosemary Extract and
This is not a moisturizing lip balm, but it is immediately softening upon application.
The directions say that this lip balm is not to be eaten. But if I had tasted it I might tell you that it tastes sweet, but not particularly flavourful. All the flavour of this lip balm seems to come from its delicious scent. To my good fortune, the store had one lip balm left in my favorite ice cream flavour – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. They also had a few pots of Chocolate Fudge Brownie, but were completely sold out of the other two flavours; Mint Chocolate Cookie and Strawberry Kiwi Swirl. But the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavour did not disappoint. It is delicious and smells just like the ice cream flavour that I love. And since Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, one of Ben & Jerry’s most popular ice cream flavors, has been around since 1984, it’s safe to say that a few other people love the flavour as much as I do. Even better, this lip balm is one of those rare beauty products that the whole family will enjoy.
At $3.00 for 0.29 oz/8.5g, Ben & Jerry’s lip balms are definitely a worthwhile buy. Although it seems these little pots of deliciousness have been on and off the market for quite some time they are currently nowhere to be found on Ben & Jerry’s website. Or elsewhere on-line. If you see them at your local Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shoppe I highly recommend picking up a few. That’s what I plan to do when Puerto Rico has recovered from Hurricane Maria and I have the chance to go back and visit the beautiful island and it’s lovely people. It is so difficult to see the people of Puerto Rico suffer after being impacted by Hurricane Maria on September 17, 2017, when just days earlier its people were so instrumental in providing relief to the Virgin Islands following Hurricane Irma. But the hearts of the people of Puerto Rico are big, and they will get through this and rebuild triumphantly.
Until my return to Puerto Rico, or until Ben & Jerry’s steps up their on-line sales offerings, I can only say that it is better to have loved and lost a lip balm than never to have loved a lip balm at all.
